The number of domestic tourist visits (DTVs) in 2023 was estimated to be 2509.63 million, up from 1731.01 million in 2022.

Visa policy of India

Before visiting India, people from the majority of nations must apply for a travel visa at their nearest Indian embassy or consulate and ensure that their passports are valid. India introduced a way for people of 156 nations to apply for an e-Tourist Visa online in 2014.

India does not require a travel visa for citizens of Bhutan, the Maldives, or Nepal. An Indian visa does not require payment from citizens of Afghanistan, Argentina, Bangladesh, DPR Korea, Jamaica, Maldives, Mauritius, Mongolia, Nepal, South Africa, or Uruguay.

The states of Nagaland, Sikkim, and portions of Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to be entered. To enter the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and some areas of Sikkim, a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is necessary. The islands of Lakshadweep require special permits to be visited.


E-Tourist Visa

To increase travel, the Indian government introduced a new visa policy in November 2014 that permits travelers and business travelers to get a "visa on arrival" at 28 international airports by obtaining an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online before their arrival, eliminating the need to go to an Indian consulate or visa center. To keep things clear, the "visa on arrival" program was renamed "e-Tourist Visa" (or "e-TV") in April 2015.

For the e-Tourist Visa, a traveler must apply online at least four to thirty days before the trip date on a secure Government of India website. If the visitor's visa is granted, they must print it out and bring it with them when they travel.

Chinese, Macau, and Hong Kong were added to the facility on July 30, 2015.
